The School of Historic Trades is a year-round program for full time students 14 and older interested in studying the historic trades in depth. Classes are taught from September through May following a traditional school calendar with classes occurring 2 days a week from 9 to 3 each day. ** There is a 4 student registration minimum in order for us to host classes.
These classes are perfect for homeschool students interested in hands on learning, gap year and young adults wanting to learn a marketable skill in the historic preservation trades, or any adult wanting to learn new skills or hobbies!
Tuition for the full year is $6500/student.
Each Module will include history of subject matter and tools used, safety, tool maintenance, tool usage, design principles and practical application.

Students will learn: ~ proper tree identification, growth habits and natural habitats. ~ sustainable forestry practices ~ felling, limbing, bucking Tools – Felling Axe, Hatchet, Crosscut Saw
Blacksmithing
Students will learn: ~ The basic skills of Drawing Out, Bending, Upsetting, Punching, Hot Cutting and Spreading ~ To create points, nails, leaves and more ~ The basic skills using a coal forge, hammer, anvil and blacksmith tongs
Timber Framing Skills: Dimensioning Lumber
Students will learn: ~ how to read the grain of wood ~ proper selection of wood species per project ~ 4 types of sawn milling methods ~ storing and drying lumber ~ riving, barking, cutting, planing Tools – Broad Axe, Froe, Mallet, Hewing Hatchet, Crosscut Saw, Maul, Planes, Draw Knife, Adze
Tool Making and Restoration
Students will learn: ~ how to make crude mallet, jointers mallet and framing mallet ~ restoration techniques including filing, sanding, sharpening, rust removal and wood repair Tools – Auger, Chisels, Maul, Saw
Woodworking/Carpentry: Stool and Shavehorse
Students will learn: ~ design and drafting techniques ~ to build a shavehorse and stool Tools – Saw, Froe, Mallet, Crosscut Saw, Draw Knife, Chisel, Spoke Shave, Hatchet, Plane
Hewing Timbers
Students will learn: ~ selective harvesting of living trees ~ practices for clearing and maintenance of wooded areas ~ dimensioning and squaring timber posts and beams ~ proper stacking and storage Tools – Felling Axe, Hatchet, Crosscut Saw, Broad Axe, Adze, Plumb Bob, Tri Square, Scribe, Chalk Box
Students will learn: ~ the 4 types of joinery: post to beam, knee braces and struts, roof, and scarf ~ proper layout methods (design and drafting techniques) and appropriate framing joinery ~ difference between scribe rule and square rule ~ wood selection for building components ~ sizing and grading timbers ~ draw boring, structure squaring, peg cutting Tools – Auger, Chisels, Timber Framing Slick, Joiner Mallet, Framing Mallet, Plane, Draw Knife, Froe, Shavehorse
Using all of the skills taught throughout the year, students will design, layout, dimension timbers, cut joinery and assemble a complete structure.
